He definitely did go too far because no one has the right to decide on whether someone else lives or dies - even if it is as a result of a rewritten timeline.

However, even though the Doctor's decision was shocking, I don't think we should have been shocked when it did happen. It's important that we keep reminding ourselves that the Doctor is not perfect. We tend to sometimes elevate him to the pedestal of gods because of all the powers he wields, but ultimately, he is a mortal as well and with his deep empathy for humans, he is very susceptible to falling victim to human fallacies.

The Tenth Doctor suffered through a series of emotional trauma made all the more devastating to him because of his greater-than-usual compassion in this particular incarnation. He care deeply for his Companions as well as their fellow humans. So when tragic sacrifices still had to be made despite all of his best attempts, grief consumed so much of his entire being that it was carried over into his next regeneration as the Eleventh Doctor and transformed into an almost righteous anger coupled with the belief that he alone knows what is best for the Universe.

I think the question of "right" is essential to looking at the episode. I'm grateful that the episode didn't make light of the consequences of the decision, but I do believe the Doctor went too far, which could potentially be fantastic for the narrative.

A few too many thoughts on the latest Doctor Who:
