Winluck Wong: Behind The Words

The name is Wong - Winluck Wong. Hmm…it doesn’t quite have the Bond ring to it but it’ll have to do. Yes, I have one of those names that have to be repeated during a handshake because people don’t often expect to hear such a name the first time. I’ve grown rather fond of the name myself actually, though I assure you that this is not a product of narcissism at all. It’s just that the name has been pivotal in the development of my philosophy in life. But that is a whole different story that I’ll write about some other time.

Ever since writing in-class journals during elementary school, I’ve developed a passion for words. Each word is inherently beautiful and when they are woven into a masterpiece of a journal, a poem, an essay, or a story, the effect is breathtaking. Writing is a form of art and I believe that all artworks are extensions of our souls.

I like writing both analytically and creatively, although to be honest, I must say I prefer the latter over the former. Writing creatively definitely has more spark in it. Currently, I write mainly poetry and short stories. I’m also working on a novel (tentatively titled Atlantis Legacy - read the Prologue here) at the moment and I hope to eventually write more novels and plays as well.

It was through creative writing and reading that I discovered another passion: acting. Whether I was creating characters or reading about them, I constantly felt the small, nagging desire to physically express their emotions. I joined a drama class in high school with the intent to satisfy this desire. For awhile, I believed it worked. I thought, “Well, that feels a little better. I think I can go back to concentrating on writing now.” Of course, things never really work out that smoothly. My “small, nagging desire” suddenly became inflamed by a thousandfold. I can distinctly remember the bubbly and frothy elation I felt when I stepped onto the stage for the first time with the curtains pulling apart and the spotlights blinding me. So, now I have to deal with two passions: writing and acting. Life is tough.

Someday, I want to become a writer. No wait, what am I saying? An actor! I want to be an actor! Okay, stop being ridiculous, writing is my first passion so obviously, it should have precedence over acting. That makes no sense at all! What kind of logic is that? Well, two can play the game - acting was my most recent passion and therefore, it should be chosen first. Give up already…stop being stubborn. I’m being stubborn?? Writing is a much stronger passion in me! So’s acting…it’s just as strong if not stronger…

Cut!! I’m so sorry that you had to be caught between us. Um…I think I’ll just resolve that argument by becoming both. Yes, that’s what I’ll do. With luck, I’ll be able to juggle them all.

I hope you enjoy your visit to my site.
