Of Corn And Chocolate
I was taken to a new realm of movie snack creativity a couple days ago at the cinema. I bumped into a friend there and while we were impatiently waiting for the movie to start, she revealed a discovery she and her sister had made that was ingenious in its simplicity: place an M&M chocolate in the centre of a handful of popcorn and enjoy the surprising scrumptiousness of the combo.
I was skeptical at first. Extremely so. I mean, that’s got to be the strangest flavour combination ever – salty and sweet?? But I was comforted by the facts that: a) she didn’t wince as she was chewing and b) I was armed with a large cup of Coke in case I need to purge my mouth of any unpleasant tastes. So I bummed an M&M off her (since I usually don’t get M&M’s when I’ve already got popcorn) and grabbed a handful of popcorn. I took a deep breath and shoved them all in my mouth. I had a firm grip on my cup of Coke while I was chewing – it was actually a miracle I didn’t squirt it all over everyone’s heads in front of me. I continued chewing and the moment I got to the centre of the popcorn handful, my eyes widened to about the size of one of the Moon’s larger craters.
It was delicious! Like she said, you go through a layer of crunchy popcorn and then you get a sweet chocolatey surprise in the middle. Why didn’t I ever think to combine the two snacks before? I mean, they’ve been selling popcorn and M&M’s side-by-side since forever. All I had to do was to get both and eat them simultaneously – it’s that simple. This is another classic example of how we never seem to notice the obvious even when it’s been lined up right in our eyesight the entire time.
Well, this is now certainly going to be my new all-time favourite movie snack: Popcorn M&M’s!

Popcorn + M&M's = Movie Snack Heaven
By the way, the movie did eventually come on and it was well worth the wait. I’m not really a Trekkie fan myself (Star Wars all the way!), but this new Star Trek movie definitely blew my mind and it may very well have nudged me a little closer to the Trekkie side. Just a little. May the Force be with me.
